Education Requirements for Professional Licensure at WNMU

Email: Evelyn.Alvarado@wnmu.edu
Phone: 575-538-6101
The information below provides guidance on WNMU programs meeting the education requirements for professional licensure and represents WNMU’s determination to the best of its knowledge. WNMU has done its due diligence in determining which programs meet the educational requirements of licensure in every state and territory. WNMU will not be liable for any determination that is later found to be inaccurate. Additionally, successful completion of an WNMU program does not guarantee attaining professional licensure in any state or territory. It has been determined that WNMU’s professional programs meet New Mexico’s state licensure requirements. If a program leading to professional licensure is listed in the document below as “Does Not Meet,” and you will be applying for licensure outside of NM, contact the appropriate licensing agency in that U.S. state or territory about licensure requirements.

Financial Aid at WNMU

Email: finaid@wnmu.edu

Phone: 575-538-6173

Link: XX

The Office of Financial Aid administers all financial aid and is responsible for monitoring student eligibility, such as Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and loan limits. Financial aid is disbursed onto student accounts and applied toward charges. The Business Office manages student account balances and credits, which is a separate process from Financial Aid. While WNMU offers affordable tuition, we understand that students often need financial assistance.

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) opens on October 1st and our priority deadline is March1st. We encourage all students to apply by the priority deadline, as some sources of funding are limited. Every school the student has applied to or taken classes at (this includes withdrawals & drops), must be reported on the WNMU application for admission. Failure to report this information may result in a delay of the Financial Aid process. While we try to assist students equally, there are time pressures that can cause problems if you wait until the last minute.

Essential Things to Know:

          • Complete the FAFSA application early. WNMU’s Federal School Code is 002664. CLICK HERE to apply for financial aid.
          • If transferring from another school, cancel any pending federal aid disbursements. Pending disbursements can affect your aid eligibility at WNMU.
          • Funds cannot be released until a student has submitted all required documents in a timely manner. Even for students who have been granted FINAL admission status, it is important to keep your student file (e.g., transcripts) up-to-date if you happen to take courses elsewhere.
          • If a student is receiving financial aid to cover the cost of the semester, please know that they must be actively involved in the process of accepting their funding AND having it applied to their billing statement. Students should communicate with their Financial Aid Counselor and use their Mustang Express account to review all information. CLICK HERE for steps to accept financial aid award.
          • Taking care of financial responsibilities with WNMU is essential to hold your spot in the courses for you are enrolled in.
          • Non-Degree Seeking applicants are not eligible to receive federal funding from WNMU.
          • Please check with the intended program Advisor and the Financial Aid Office to find out if your program is eligible for financial aid through WNMU.

Adding a course:

              • Add periods typically happen within the first days/week of classes. This period allows student to make changes to their schedule. Refer to the academic calendar or enrollment dates schedule for specific dates, as the add period is determined by each course’s unique start date.

Dropping a course:

              • Drop periods happen within the first days/week of classes. Refer to the academic calendar or enrollment dates schedule for specific dates. “Dropping” a course means it is removed from the student’s record and the student is not charged tuition/fees for those hours. The course will not appear on the transcript.

              • Students who intend to “withdraw” from a class must do so by a specific time within the semester. These dates vary depending on the individual class. Refer to the academic calendar and enrollment dates for specific dates. “Withdrawing” from a course means a grade of “W” will be recorded on the student’s transcript and the student is  responsible for all charges associated with the course. If a student wants to withdraw from all credits for a term, a “Complete Withdraw Form” must be requested through the student’s Mustang Express account. **Note: If a student withdraws from all classes in a semester, a new application to the university and application fee are required before the student can register in any future term [unless the student is already registered for the subsequent term prior to the withdrawal submission]**

      • Credit will be awarded based on evidence of learning, not for experience or time spent.
      • Determination of credit awards will be made by appropriate subject matter and credentialing experts.
      • Specific assessment and policies and procedures will be implemented for all programs accepting credit for prior learning.

The School of Education recognizes prior learning as achieved by teachers licensed via alternative licensure completed outside of a graduate school setting. Credit will be awarded based on evidence of learning as demonstrated through the completion of a Teaching Event Portfolio. The Teaching Event Portfolio requires applicants to develop and teach an instructional unit, and provides documentation of planning, instruction, assessment, and reflection on student learning. Qualified faculty within the School of Education will evaluate the Teaching Event Portfolio. Applicants may be awarded up to 12 credit hours of graduate credit towards the completion of a Master’s of Arts in Teaching:

Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies

For Example, with an 18-hour concentration, 6 hours could be accepted, and with a 9-hour concentration, just 3 hours would be permitted. When completed as a 30-hour degree, transfer credits would be limited to 6 hours, with the 1/3 cap applied to each discipline as mentioned above. All transfer hours must be approved by program faculty and the Chair of Interdisciplinary Studies with regard to content and requested hours.

Master of Science in Nursing

A maximum of nine (9) transfer credits may be applied towards the MSN degree. Of these, only the following combination of courses (equivalent of nine credits hours) may be applied towards the M.S.N. degree:

Master of Arts in Social Work

A total of 1/3 of the hours needed to complete an M.S.W. degree may be transfer credits from another CSWE accredited M.S.W. program. For the 39 credit hour advanced standing M.S.W. that would mean a possible total of 13 hours. For the non-advanced standing M.S.W. program of 60 credit hours that would mean 17 could be transfer credits. All transferred courses must reflect a grade of “B” (3.0) or higher from the granting institution.

The following courses must be taken at WNMU: SWK 681 and SWK 682.

All transfer hours must be approved by program faculty and the department chair with regard to content and requested hours. In accordance with accreditation guidelines from the Council on Social Work Education, the School.

The general policies of the University, as outlined in the catalog, apply to international students as well as students who are United States citizens. Certain policies necessitated by federal laws are applicable only to international students. An international student is any individual attending WNMU who holds or who is seeking an F-1 or J-1 non-immigrant visa through WNMU. Legally admitted immigrants and refugees are not considered international students. All students at the graduate level are required to adhere to both university admission and programmatic admission requirements. Please note that programmatic admission acceptance cannot be determined until the student is accepted as a final admit through the university and Graduate Division.

Health Insurance Requirements for International Students

All international students enrolled at Western New Mexico University (WNMU) are required to maintain comprehensive health insurance coverage for the duration of their enrollment in the United States. Maintaining active health insurance is a condition of enrollment. Students who fail to carry adequate coverage are considered in violation of university policy and assume full financial responsibility for any medical expenses incurred.

Students may obtain health insurance through a provider of their choice, provided the policy meets or exceeds WNMU’s established minimum coverage requirements. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure continuous coverage throughout their stay in the United States.

Students who elect to purchase independent coverage must submit official proof of insurance to the Graduate Admissions and Outreach Programs Office by the applicable deadline:

      • July 1 for Fall semester enrollment
      • December 1 for Spring semester enrollment

If acceptable proof of coverage is NOT received by the stated deadline, WNMU will enroll the student in a university-selected health insurance plan and charge the cost to the student’s university account. Coverage arranged by WNMU will extend through the full academic year associated with the student’s term of entry (e.g., beginning August 1 for Fall enrollment).

Students who submit proof of alternative coverage after the deadline remain financially responsible for any charges associated with the university-purchased plan. Adjustments, if any, will be subject to the terms and proration policies of the insurance provider.

Minimum Insurance Coverage Requirements

All health insurance policies—whether obtained independently or through WNMU’s designated carrier—must include, at minimum:

      • $100,000 per person per accident or illness
      • $25,000 coverage for repatriation of remains
      • $50,000 coverage for medical evacuation

Students who choose to secure their own insurance coverage will be provided with informational resources to assist in identifying plans that meet these requirements. WNMU does not endorse or recommend any specific insurance provider.
